CISM's the place for Placements!

There's no doubt having real, workplace experience on their CVs is a great way for students to get a head start on the career ladder when they graduate. But in these difficult economic times, how can we get employers to give students a chance?

The team in CISM seem to have cracked the problem, with the number of students securing 1 year placements showing a 33% increase over last year. So far 65 CISM students are out working with employers like GSK, IBM, Reuters, Disney and Sony, as well as a wide range of smaller organisations.

“It hasn't been easy,” said Dawn Farrow, CISMs Industrial Placement Manager. “Many of our usual placement employers have cut back this year and we've had to expand our activities to make a lot of new contacts.”

“We've promoted the advantages of placements to students too, explaining the academic and career benefits of having real work experience on their CVs when they graduate. It's all part of our Employability drive, to equip our students with the skills and abilities to succeed in their careers.”

The Placements team are already planning their campaign for next year, which looks like being just as tough. “A lot depends on the economy”, said Dawn. “If businesses feel more confident about the future, maybe there will be more places for students next year. But we're working on the basis that it will continue to be a challenge.”
